Where Can I Carry?

Over the past few weeks there have been two widely reported incidents of otherwise law abiding citizens with valid concealed carry permits/licenses, being arrested in New York City.  This includes a former marine from Indiana and a late 30s woman from Tennessee.   Both of these people were arrested when they observed a "no firearms" sign and then asked security personnel about checking their firearms.  Naturally the DA in Bloomberg's NY is going after them with both barrels.  These people made an honest mistake, they simply believed that NYC is part of the U.S.A.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Only the wealthy and well connected are allowed to obtain a permit to carry a gun in NYC.  Even upstate New Yorkers with a New York permit are barred from carrying within the hallowed confines of the rotten apple. Kahr P380 Third Range Report

We finally had some beautiful weather concurrent with my ability to slip out to the range.  This has been a miserable start to the year.  I can't remember the last time we didn't get any golf in during either March or April.  It seemed to be raining almost constantly.  Thankfully we've had a couple of days of nice weather and my son and I could turn some money into bangs and holes in paper. Choosing A Self Defense Gun

Kahr and Pocket HolsterMany first time gun purchasers wonder into the local gun shop without any idea of the type of firearm they would like to buy.  They may know that they want a gun to protect their family.  They probably know whether they intend to carry it concealed or leave it at home and accessible to deal with a late night intruder.  They probably don't know much about single action, double action, double action only, hammer fired, striker fired, 9 mm, .380, .45 etc etc.  They know they want the protection that owning a gun can provide but nothing much about guns.

If you are in this position, I'd love to welcome you into the ranks of self reliant, gun owning citizens, but owning a gun isn't even the first step.  Knowing how to use it effectively is the first step.  That brand new .45 1911 doesn't do anything but increase your risk if you don't know how to use it.

Kahr P380 Range Report

Earlier this week I picked up a new pocket pistol for deep concealment carry. My other pocket pistol is the Beretta Tomcat which is 32 auto. The Kahr is a 380 (9mm short) which packs a bit more punch and the gun weighs less and is thinner than the Tomcat. This will equal more comfortable pocket carry and less printing when carried in my strong side front pocket. However, after my first trip to the range, I'm not so sure about carrying this gone at all.

The manual with this firearm says that it requires a 200 round break-in period before it really begins to function totally reliably. Fine, I'll hold judgement until I put all 200 rounds through the gun but given the performance of the first 85 rounds I fired, I think this gun may be heading back to Kahr. Continue Reading »

Kahr P380

The only sure way to avoid disappointment during the holidays is to shop for your own "presents."  That's just what I did when I got my wife to reluctantly agree to allow me to purchase another pistol for the collection.

The new member of the family is the Kahr P380.  The P380 is a small pocket pistol.  My old "deep concealment" pistol was the Beretta Tomcat 32.  The Kahr is chambered in 380 so packs a bit more punch than the Beretta and it weighs slightly less.  Although the Tomcat is a fine pistol, my one isue is the width of the grip.  For such a small caliber handgun this grip is just too wide.  Carrying it in the front pocket worked but I really wanted something with more punch and a bit thinner, enter the fine Kahr P380.
